G.A.A.C. continues to Shine at the Ex Grounds... |
|
Once again Golden Age was blessed with good weather for their 24th annual Show and Shine (Truro, Nova Scotia, May 19-21, 2006). Crowds on Saturday were good, but Sunday was even more impressive; show organizers estimate close to 10,000 people on the grounds during peak hours! In its second year at the Truro Raceway/Provincial Exhibition Grounds, the show is beginning to grow to fit into its new, hopefully permanent home. Flea
Market One of the most obvious signs of growth was the Flea Market. While last year enjoyed a good selection of vendors, both in the Agri-Dome and on the centre track, this year the Agri-Dome was completely booked well before the actual show, and overflow for those with their own trailers spilled out into the space next to the Dome (used last year for the Car Corral).
Right next door to the GAAC
table was a new booth, for the Miramichi Rock 'n
Roll Festival, which organized a successful
coalition with their town Inside the Agri-Dome there was a constant swirl of activity, with visitors of all ages enjoying the chance to pick up bargains or that rare vintage car item. The folks from the the
Annual Lotto-Truck Festival (from the nearby town of Brookfield),
attended again, and once again the GAAC Raffle Also in the Agri-dome, staff from Golden Age and volunteer workers from the Atlantic Call Centre were selling tickets on some pretty nifty prizes. Unlike the goodies for the show car owners, anyone could enter for these premium items and the proceeds went to charity, but ONLY 2000 tickets were sold so your chances were pretty good! Check out some of the nice toys below...

Prizes Over the years, Golden Age has been pleased to receive terrific donations of prizes from our sponsors and has worked out a fair system to award them to show car participants. Rather than judging in various categories and making almost impossible decisions on all the excellent vehicles entered, each owner displaying a show car simply gets an entry and prizes are drawn for at the end of the weekend. This way, everyone has a chance, whether than can make it for all three days or just for an afternoon. Prizes were displayed prominently in the main Grandstand building, right next to car registration.
Float your mouse over the photo above, and click wherever your pointer changes from an arrow to a hand, to see the details of some of these great prizes! As in 2005, the real stars
of the show were displayed in the centre ring of the race track.
This shot shows an off-peak period near the end of the day on
Saturday, when most of the cars had gone home to be tucked up for the
night, but Sunday was very crowded. To check out The Car Corral Every
year, Golden Age Show & Shine offers an opportunity for car owners
to offer vehicles for sale, in a special area reserved just for
transactions, the Car Corral. This year the Corral was moved to
a stretch of the track at the far end of the raceway. This
provided a more open and level area for the sellers, allowing for
better display of some really fine vehicles. Both

outside the Agri-Drome, a contingent of personnel from the Canadian
Armed forces once again set up a display of tough little vehicles
(definitely "off-road-ready") which seemed pretty popular
with the males, both young and old at the show! Haven't asked
yet, but I keep wondering what goes on in the camouflage tent?
I'm too nervous to stick my head in, in case I find myself signing up
for As
always, the Show and Shine attracted visitors I also noticed a good selection of license plates from other provinces in the parking lots; even a polar bear plate from the North West Territories!
